Yes, SEM is still relatively new but people are slowly realizing the full potential of the Internet to market their businesses. 

Since there are &lt;a href="http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm" rel="nofollow"&gt;1.3 billion users online&lt;/a&gt;, niche markets are now made up of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of people. 

Marketing can now be exceptionally targeted (especially when analytics are used) so that advertising becomes valuable to the consumer, rather than being annoying and invasive.
