What are “web spiders”? |
Web spiders, (aka web crawlers, bots and automated indexers) may sound like something from a science fiction movie,
But they are actually common devices that search through the Internet indexing information. Search Engines use web spiders to catalogue web pages for processing, making search results for those pages quicker and more accessible for users. They are also used for automatic maintenance of web sites, usually for tasks like code checking and link harvesting. A web spider starts with a list of URLs and then goes through those pages indexing all of the hyperlinks within, adding them to the list or “crawl frontier”.
Having consistent blog posts and search engine optimization for important key terms attracts web spiders to your web page as they are consistently making note of changes in the web. If your website is consistently undergoing change and anticipating what these spiders are looking for, the better your chances of having your site appear quicker in a Google (or Yahoo, MSN, etc) search.
