Keeping Motivated to Blog Through Change |
A friend of mine has confided that he is having trouble staying motivated when it comes to writing consistent posts and articles. After some careful analysis of his dilemma, I decided to write a post dedicated to anyone who wants some motivation and is willing to change their blog to get it. The following are some general tips to help those looking to revamp their efforts find some footing as they look to the future:
Consider a new layout and design. You may feel that you’re blog’s appearance is hindering your motivation to write for it. A new design theme or layout can help rekindle your desire to post. Incorporate greater accessibility, uniqueness and clarity into your design to maximize the presentation of your content. A fresh new look for your blog is a great way for you to take more pride in your work, especially if you take the time to design it yourself.
Define and narrow your blog’s focus. Your blog’s content may be too broad and varied, making it difficult for you to get down to business and develop consistent content. Write a list of things you are interested in and capable of writing about. Create a list of possible categories that could potentially appear on your blog. Now try and see if any of those categories can be lumped together. The more you narrow your categories down, the more focused your content will become. It is much easier to write (and read!) a post with a single idea than a post covering several concepts. Take the time to carefully direct your efforts so you don’t spread yourself too thin.
Get into more detailed brainstorming sessions. Starting from scratch every time you write a post can cause great frustration and slow your blogging momentum to a halt. You want to come to your blogging with energy and purpose, rather than a detached, searching feeling. Have regular and detailed brainstorming sessions with yourself (grab a friend if you can) and it will help you map out your ideas so you can separate the wheat from the chaff.
Plan ahead and have a sense of direction for your blog. Spend some time outlining goals and benchmarks for your blog. How large do you want your readership to be? Who are you writing for? What type of feedback do you want? What do you want your audience to do with your content? How many posts can you realistically write/publish a week? Have a good understanding of where you blog is headed and what you want it to do. A flimsy plan can leave you feeling aimless when it comes to managing your blog. Be honest with yourself and assess your strengths and weaknesses. If you overestimate your commitment, you may feel disappointed when you can’t reach your goals. If you underestimate yourself, you may become bored with your content and your blog won’t grow. Give yourself some guidelines so you can direct your content and always have an idea of where to go next after you’ve finished a post. Leave yourself (and readers) wanting more every time.
Stay true to yourself and write what you are passionate about. Many bloggers wear themselves out because they feel obligated to write a certain way or discuss certain subjects to cater to expectations or meet market demands – they simply aren’t passionate about their content and are merely playing the game for points. If you aren’t passionate about your content then there is simply no point in writing it. Blogging should be enjoyable and not just a chore you repetitiously go through.
Write about what you know and you care about.
A bonus tip: Write as if no one will ever read your blog. You can worry about your reader’s expectations later. Many great writers start off writing for themselves. Doing so will help you get to heart of your content with honesty and candor, as well as reveal your own unique voice, style and tone. Blogging presents an incredible opportunity for self-expression so don’t let self-censorship stop you from taking charge with your ideas. The more in tune you are with your thoughts and feelings, the more direct, relatable and original your content will be. You are your own greatest resource.
We hope these points can help you find purpose and enjoyment in your blogging, so you can come to it feeling refreshed and energized. Change can be a good thing, so consider these options if you are feeling detached from your blog. Always remember that things take time to grow, so if the changes you want don’t happen right away, don’t get discouraged and walk away. Everybody has experience and knowledge that can be valuable to others, on many different levels. Take the time to reevaluate what you have to offer and hone in on those little sparks of inspiration. The world is out there waiting for you!
