How to Create Blog Value for Your Readers |
To attract a dedicated readership for your blog, it is important that your entries show their ‘value’. Meaning, your blog posts must have a clear purpose which will benefit your audience. Most blogs strive to either inform or entertain, and to have a successful blog, it is vital that you set out what you want to achieve in your article before publishing your thoughts online.

To show value in your blog, formulate your entries with the intention of taking your readers to another level of understanding within your field or topic. Show them that you know something that they don’t know and then let them in on it. Here are a few pointers on crafting your entries with this value in mind:
Get the facts. The Internet is revolutionary because a vast amount of data can be easily archived and retrieved by an incredibly wide demographic. With the amount of information out there, you need to get straight to what matters: the classic Where, What, When, Why and How of the situation. Take the time to research on a topic or subject before writing your posts to develop an understanding of the basic facts – this is what most readers will be immediately after.
Organize and Contextualize Your Information. Because of the depth of information available on the Net, the value of your blog will be partially determined by how well you organize and present your information. By making it accessible to your readers, you make it easy for them and save them time. Do this in your blog design as well as through your writing by concentrating on clarity. Provide a clear visual impression (charts, graphs, pictures, etc) as well as contribute context of what you’re talking about in your article. Attempt to leave little room for misinterpretation.
Provide Analysis. How does the information in your posts fit into the broader scheme of things? What are the implications of the story you are covering? What can we expect from your subject matter in the future? When writing your post, have these analytical questions in mind to better anticipate the needs of your readers – they need to know how to fit your blog’s information into their lives. Rather than just laying out all the facts, take your blog a step further by telling your readers how they can use this information, encouraging them to travel deeper into the discussion.
Offer Suggestions. Make it clear to your readers that you have thoughts and suggestions for meeting their needs. When you analyze the information you have gathered, be free to respond with your own two cents – giving your readers an idea to accept (or reject) when learning about your blog’s topics. Your angle doesn’t always have to be completely refined or authoritative, either. By keeping things open-ended, you leave plenty of room for visitor comments. Outlining tips, tools and ideas for your readers will concisely inform them of your expertise (or at least give them an idea of where you are coming from and how you think).
All these tenants of value are important to any writer, with none being more vital or necessary than the other. What is essential is that you come into the blog writing process with questions in mind – questions that your audience will be sure to ask of your work. Why is this information important? What does it mean? How can I use it to my benefit? Can this blog introduce me to new ideas and resources? What can I get from this blog that I can’t get anywhere else? These are all questions to consider when creating blog value.
